Should your business jump on the You Tube bandwagon?

Beyond cat videos and stupid people tricks, is You Tube worth it for small business?

Last week I attended the SF Business Times Social Media for Small Business workshop with Michael Neuendorff

After three hours of lecture, my head was absolutely spinning.  The course was chock a block full of great information — very specific to what entreprenuers and small business folks need to figure out how they fit into the social media landscape.  Michael is clearly a very experienced and knowledgeable coach in this area, so I took his advice very seriously.

On the subject of You Tube video and its effectiveness for business, Michael rattled off these significant stats:

1.  500 YEARS of YouTube videos are watched on Facebook every month

2. Each WEEK 100 million social interactions occur on YouTube

When I got home, I consulted my other guru on the subject, Paul Slack from Splash Media. His book, Social Rules, estimates that by 2014, 90% of all web traffic will be video.  His stats were equally impressive:

1. You Tube is the second-largest search engine in the world.

2. Over 2 billion videos are watched each day.

3. 70% of the people watching are adults, 18 years or older.

I also, naturally, loved the fact that Paul advocates using a professional company to produce your You Tube video.

His book has a whole chapter on You Tube video and how to maximize it but whatever the stats, for me it always comes back to storytelling.  What is the story you want to tell? Can video communicate it in a way that is better than still photos and text? Sometimes, incredible still images are preferable to mediocre moving images.  But then, still images can always be edited together with music, motion graphics and narration to give them a sense of movement that may be more engaging for your audience.

Is your story informative? Is it funny? It is heartwarming? Somehow, you want to engage your audience emotionally, so finding that hook will make for the most successful You Tube video for your service or product.

Recently, we launched a series of You Tube videos on volunteer travel, entitled Journeys for Good.  These are short 2 -3 minute videos, with each one capturing a part of a voluntour experience.  Over the series, you get a sense of the whole experience, but each one is broken up into a “digestible bit”.  Fans come back for more, or click onto the website for more information.

For A Band of Wives, a social media group, we produced a series of funny and heartwarming videos on a group cleanse.  This helped convey the sense of fun and community that the group espouses.

It doesn’t have to be a series.  You can start with one, well produced You Tube video that captures what you do best, or tells more about who you are, or gives some related information that your audience will appreciate.

Whatever your product or service, think about what a viewer would really want to see.  What would engage or impress them enough to take a next step with your business?  And remember, your You Tube video will represent you, so make sure it is a high quality tool.  It doesn’t make sense to spend a gazillion dollars on a website or brochure, but cut corners on the video.  Bring in a great creative production partner who can help get your story across most effectively.

And if you’re a pet store owner, well heck, you have an advantage on all of us.  You can set up a cute kitten cam and you’re on your way to You Tube stardom.

Top 3 Reasons Your Business Needs a Video

Sure, I’m biased here.  Since we’re a video production company, it makes sense we’d give you this advice.  Right?  Well, yes.  And not just because we’d like to be your video producer, but because believe it or not, we believe it too.

Over the past 25 years, we’ve worked with Fortune 500 clients and startups, non-profits and local businesses that all needed something slightly different from their corporate video production.  It might have been a sales and marketing video or an informational video, but when they came to us, they had already decided that they needed it.

So, if you’re sitting on the fence about video production, here are the top 3 reasons to jump in:

1. Nothing tells your story better than a great video.  Video is more interesting than a brochure any day and engages your audience on multiple levels with compelling images and great audio.

2. Video will help you maximize your Search rankings. (According to Business Week, videos are 53 times more likely to show up in Google search results over websites)*

3. You can use your video in multiple settings — on the web, in sales meetings, at trade shows — making it a good bang for the buck.

Whether its $2500 or $25,000, video production budgets can range dramatically depending on your needs.  When you’re shopping for a video production company,  look for  a reputable company to guide you in your process.  If it seems like an incredible bargain, you want to know why.  Ask to see work samples that will represent the quality and style they are offering for that price.  A good company will be able to help you identify the best use of your production budget, so that you get the most polished end result.

After all, you want this video to have a long life and represent you well.  It will be a significant determining factor in the way people perceive your product or service.

Convinced?  OK — Lights, Camera, Action!

Great new stats on the power of online video for business.

I wanted to share this recent article I stumbled upon on Business to Community which has a ton of great new online video stats.  Its encouraging to see that facts and figures are reinforcing what we’ve believed all along, that video is an essential part of any business marketing and public relations toolkit.  Here are a just a few of my favorites:

  • 81% of senior marketing executives now use online video content in their marketing programs, up from 70% in 2011, as reported by MarketingProfs.
  • A study by Comscore found that on average a website visitor will stay two minutes longer on a site when they watch a video.
  • Online video accounts for 50% of all mobile traffic and up to 69% of traffic on certain networks (source: Bytemobile Mobile Analytics Reports, 2013)
  • MarketingProfs estimate that 76% of senior marketing executives say campaigns that
  • Ice.com found that viewers who chose to view video converted at a 400% increase over those who didn’t. The site also credited video with decreasing returns by 25%

Business owners, marketing folks and PR professionals want to find a production company that delivers affordable quality.  Sometimes they may need video for their websites, email marketing campaigns or social media.  Other times, they want to produce video which can be used for sales or broadcast publicity. If its a non-profit or startup, they may be looking for a memorable fundraising tool.   Whatever their reasons, clients understand that their video represents their brand and creates a lasting impression for their clients and prospective customers.

When shopping for a professional video production company, look for one that combines great production skill with top notch creative and you’re on you way.

Award-Winning Documentary Film Team Continue Their Journey For Good And Embark On Voluntour Adventure In Cambodia

Steve, Joanie and Ryan Wynn

December 26, award-winning  husband and wife production team, Steve and Joanie Wynn, are embarking on an volunteer adventure to Cambodia with non-profit Globe Aware.   They will be documenting the experience for their public television series, “Journeys for Good”, now in development with KQED-TV and their San Francisco Bay Area production company, Bayside Entertainment.

Steve Wynn on voluntour trip in Mbgala, Tanzania

In 2009, the Wynns traveled to Africa with Roadmonkey Adventure Philanthropy to produce a documentary on a group of women who traveled across the world to do a hands-on volunteer project at a school for AIDS orphans. They built desks, refurbished classrooms, installed a clean water filtration system and replaced the school’s wood-burning stoves with clean burning gas stoves.  They worked side by side the local people and ate lunch each day with the teachers and bibis, or grandmothers, who cared for the children.  Their documentary on the experience, “A Journey for Good:Tanzania” aired on public television stations around the country in 2011/2012, garnering four Emmy nominations and two Telly Awards.

At the end of December, the Wynns will travel again, this time with their 9 year-old son Ryan, to Siem Reap with non-profit partner Globe Aware.  They will be building wheelchairs for land mine victims, many the same age as Ryan.  They will teach English to Buddhist monks .  They will build a well at a home for the disabled.

Globe Aware volunteer with Cambodian children.

Footage from their trip will be incorporated into their series for public television and online media.  They will also be posting blogs throughout the experience on their voluntourism website Journeys4Good.com

Steve Wynn remarked, “We knew that our first volunteer trip to Africa would be an amazing story, but we had no idea how it would transform not just the lives of the volunteers, but our lives as well. We came home inspired to start Journeys for Good as a way to spread the word about voluntourism, showing people how incredibly rewarding this kind of travel can be.  “

Joanie Wynn added, “We are excited to share this with our son, Ryan and we will ring in the New Year in Cambodia, kicking off what we hope will be an inspiring and adventure-filled 2013.”

More information:

Through their Emmy award-winning production company, Bayside Entertainment, Steve and Joanie Wynn have traveled the world together, producing stories for Travel Channel, History Channel, Discovery, HBO and Conservation Corporation Africa.

The Wynns developed Journeys for Good as a way to spread the message of volunteer travel.  The series, website and related online and social media will celebrate volunteer travel experiences, volunteer heroes, and voluntour organizations that make a difference.

Journeys for Good is currently in development as a series for public television and will be distributed through KQED-TV,San Franciscoand American Public Television.

KQED quote about the series:

“We expect Journeys for Good to be both exciting and touching. Voluntourism is naturally fraught with conflict and yet buoyed by the human spirit and the exotic locales provide a fascinating backdrop for a compelling cast of heroes and underdogs”.

Globe Aware , a nonprofit 501(c)(3) develops short-term volunteer programs in international environments that encourage people to immerse themselves in a unique way of giving back. Every activity in which they engage is intended to accomplish one of two things: promote cultural awareness and/or promote sustainability. Chosen projects meet several key criteria: safe, culturally interesting, genuinely beneficial to a needy community, and involve significant interaction with the host community.

Volunteers help to empower the host communities in creating renewable, sustainable programs. While Globe Aware’s financial assistance benefits the community economically, it is actually the involvement and collaboration between the volunteers and community that is the greatest mutual benefit. Globe Aware is not a foundation that focuses on giving out charity, but rather an organization which focuses on creating self reliance.

Professional Video Production: Essential Tips for Marketing Success

In an increasingly splintered media landscape, marketers are becoming more like publishers. Content marketing allows businesses to communicate their brand message and familiarize prospects and customers with their goods and services.

Of all the content marketing tactics, video production has moved to the top of the list. Prospective clients will watch videos to educate themselves on goods and services before purchasing.

In fact, YouTube has become the second largest search engine behind Google. Effective web video production can help differentiate a company from its competitors and create an effective sales funnel.

Here are some tips to get the most professional corporate video production possible for effective marketing videos:

Hire Top Talent
A superior corporate video production company will be able to produce quality material in a timely manner. In addition, they have a high level of professionalism that helps move the project forward, and encourages communication. Look for vendors with a number of strong customer testimonials from satisfied clients.

Videos That Can Cross Channels
Video is an extremely flexible medium that can be used across many marketing channels. For example, an effective sales video can be used on the company website, at a tradeshow, during company training sessions, posted to external blogs, used in advertisements and in presentations to financial investors.

Optimize For SEO
Video production is ideal for companies that have products and services that require demonstration. After uploading marketing videos to video sharing sites like YouTube, videos should be optimized with SEO-friendly titles and descriptions, as well as useful links. Often popular videos begin to rank higher than the company website.

Realistic Budgets
Communication is important. By being transparent with your goals and needs, the web video production creative team can show you how to use sales videos to best communicate your story in the most compelling way.

In today’s business landscape, video marketing is a powerful tool to help deepen engagement and break through the white noise of chattering competitors. By implementing the tools suggested here, marketers can carve their own identity in the marketplace, gain new customers and build sales revenue.

Corporate Video Production Toys – Er, I Mean Tools

When you’re trying to accomplish a lot of bang for your corporate video production buck, sometimes it helps to add some cool tools in the mix.

In addition to the standard camera, lighting and grip equipment, sometimes having a few extra “toys”  can really give your corporate video production quality a nice bump.  While not every video marketing budget has the resources for big stage shoots and high priced toys, there are lots of affordable options out there that can still add tremendous benefit.

We have a number of in-house tools that we use to give this advantage.  For example, we employ our Dana dolly, Steadicam, or EZ Jib to add movement — choosing the right tool based on the needs of each scenario.  It’s subtle, but it can make a nice difference.

For this product demo video we produced for Tapjoy,  we used our Dana dolly mounted on speedrail to add a nice slight movement.

At zynga, we used our steadicam to bring energy to a walk-through shot of the game design offices for a mini documentary series we are producing.

Of course, if you got the budget, there’s nothing like helicopter footage.  Steve recently got a bird’s eye view of the Bechtel Family Summit Reserve in West Virginia on a shoot for Boy Scouts of America.  The footage he brought back was amazing and definitely worth the extra cost to show off the beautiful natural environment.

Your director of photography can guide you in choosing the right tools to benefit your project without breaking the bank.

Start the press! 3 ways video can support your company’s PR efforts.

Businesses commonly use video for sales and marketing.  On company websites, corporate videos do a great job of showcasing products and services with demo videos, customer testimonials and beautiful location videos.   Corporate image reels can introduce your company leadership and share your mission.  At trade show events, videos create a lasting impression with compelling images and great music.  And in sales meetings, a video inserted into your powerpoint or as a leave behind DVD will make the impact to your potential customer greater and longer lasting.

But what about PR? How can video help to support your public relations efforts? Here are three great strategies:

1. Instead of a traditional press release about a new product, service or news item, why not create a video news release or VNR?  Its important to frame your story in a larger context so that it has real newsworthy appeal, with your product or service stepping in to solve a problem or your expertise filling a particular niche.  It mustn’t in any way feel like an infomercial or it won’t get air time.

2. If your company is sponsoring a special event or supports a non-profit cause, these are fantastic stories to tell with video.  A short 2-3 minute event video, produced by your company, can bring a lot of “shine” back to your organization — and be hosted on the event website as well as your own.  Online newspapers and magazines sometimes feature event and cause video on their sites as well.  Remember to include a soundbite with a spokesperson from your organization saying why your company feels its important to give back in this way.  It reinforces your organizations commitment to the community and makes your business the “hero”.

3. Electronic Press Kit or EPK: Just like a formal press kit, the electronic version includes the story of your product or services, featuring key company personnel.  Instead of a downloadable PDF, however, its told in video form.

For broadcast, you’ll want to include selected soundbites as “stand alone” elements in the EPK, along with raw broll footage.  We always recommend also including a fully produced featurette which frames the story as you want it told.  If you’re lucky, the broadcaster will play your produced piece — but even if they don’t, you’ll have provided the direction and made it easier for them to produce their own story.

Its important to use good quality video and sound. If you can, hire a professional company to produce it for you.  Afterall, this video will represent your company to the world, so you want the impression to be favorable.

And remember, much of the content you gather for PR purposes can also be re-purposed for website, tradeshow and sales.  So ready, set….Start the presses!!

Website Video Powers SEO.

Recently, I came across some great new stats about video for your website in a post from Business2Community:

- Videos are 53 times more likely than text pages to appear on page one of search results.

- Companies using video experience a 36% annual sales increase.

- Video-centric businesses see a 45% increase in web traffic and time spent on site.

- Video viewers stay twice as long on a website if it features video.

Depending on your product or service, video can be used in a number of ways on your website to support sales and marketing.  For example, an introductory or corporate branding video could introduce your company to site visitors.  You can include happy customer testimonials and use zippy graphics and music to help convey your key attributes.

Product demo videos are another great way to keep your visitors engaged and interested in your business.

Informational videos are always a great way to become an “expert” in the eyes of your future customers, positioning you as an industry leader.

Perhaps you were named a favorite business in your community or your product/service won accolades of some kind.  If you have something new or important to tout, a video announcement is a great way to go.

Whatever you choose, keep your website videos short — 2 – 2:30 minutes is ideal.  And make sure the quality represents your brand.  If a visitor takes the time to view your video, you want them to say “wow” and be intrigued enough to take next steps.

Keep your videos up to date and refresh them as often as you can afford.  This will support your SEO efforts by giving search engines fresh, rich media to update.

Beyond your website, you should also post your video on You Tube.  And always add a call to action at the end of your video, like a phone number to call for a free quote.

With great video added to your website, you’ll be on your way to increasing your brand awareness, making your site “stickier” and generating search engine traffic.
